Holiday Memories

Winter holidays are a gleeful break from the norm.

There are wet mittens on the heater and mini marshmallows in the hot chocolate.  There are hugs from Grandma and yummy smells wafting from the kitchen.

When there is no school, you can stay snuggled in your warm bed or get up extra early to watch holiday cartoons on tv.  You can sneak short bread cookies and everyone everywhere is giving away mini candy canes.

Everyone’s house it lit up with lights and cheer and the question, how many more sleeps, is asked a hundred million times.

The whole family gathers around the table for board games and huge meals.  There are sleds slinging down the hill and gingerbread houses tilting slightly to the left.

There are special memories being made and remembered.

every year on the 23, we spend the night at my father in law's house. we open gifts and watch christmas vacation, then get up to a huge pre-holiday party breakfast to gear us up for the craziness of the next couple of days. it's a wonderfully relaxing way to start out the festivities.

Whenever we travel somewhere new, we buy a Christmas tree ornament depicting that location. Then each year as we decorate the tree, we remember the fun places we've been and the memories we made there.

Every year my dad would complain we already have too many toys and tells us "That Santa better not show his face here or they'll be reindeer stew for supper tomorrow." We just laughed at him, when he told that to my son last year he scared him, but then i told him the secret... Grampy hates guns and has never ever owned one, now he just laughs when Grampy plays the Christmas Grouch.

Christmas eve, we all get together at my moms and have snacks, listen to Christmas tunes and spend time with our family and close friends! Then we put on a Christmas movie for the kids before they go to bed. Its a great time and I look forward to it every year!

My favorite holiday tradition is our picnic dinner of snacky type foods while watching a kid friendly Christmas special, I've been doing that since I was a kid and I brought it into my family and it's been a hit!

We love opening gifts on Christmas eve when we were little. And now that I have my own kid, I love seeing the glow on her eyes while opening her own gifts. We also celebrate on New Year's eve... praying together with the whole family, with a lot of foods on the table... this is definitely our family's favorite time of the year.

My favorite holiday tradition are our Christmas Eve parties. My aunt and cousins years ago began a tradition of having a Christmas Eve pajama dinner. All family actually arrived in their pjs (adults, too!) to enjoy a big Italian dinner, then a present exchange. It was nice being in pjs already because the night always ran late, then we're return home and immediately go to sleep. We continue the tradition now with a Christmas Eve pj dinner at our house, inviting friends and family over for Christmas Eve lasagna and meatballs, movies, and fun.

My favorite holiday tradition is the entire family getting to open one gift on Christmas Eve, which was always new PJ's so we all looked good for the camera on the big day. But, the funnies thing is that my mom could never remember which presents contained the PJ's so it always took longer than it should. Such great fun and memories. Now that I have my own son and this is his first Christmas, I hope to continue the tradition.

We make gingerbread men and hang them on our tree every year. We put some low on the tree one year and when we woke up and all that is left was the string. We were all curious. Turns out our dogs just love eating them. It started out as a mystery but now it's a holiday favorite to wake up and see if any cookies have been eaten.

Holiday memories are the best. We had blinky lights on the tree and my mom tricked me into thinking she had some sort of control over them...blink on! blink off! I was gullible.
